Friends

The road friends travel on,

is very rough indeed,

for they always want to help,

but sometimes it’s too hard.

Sometimes nothing can be done,

sometimes you try to help,

and your stomach starts to knot,

because all you do is fret.

You can only hope,

it will end just fine,

and no one will get hurt,

physically or emotionally.

It’s very difficult,

when all you do is help,

but after you try,

all you do is worry.

Why does it,

have to be this way?

why can’t we,

all be problem free?

Maybe because,

you wouldn’t need friends,

and know how it feels,

to know someone always cares.

Last Winter in the Parking Lot

I can recall one wondrous night

When Sycamore was cloaked in white

And sparkles dancing to the ground

Filled my heart with deep delight

My friend and I with playful sound

Lost in all the fun we’d found

Made angels in the parking lot

And tossed the sparkling snow around

The flakes that swirled and whirled and fought

Soon our tongues and eyelids caught

And so we chanced to stay a while

For we were young, and time was not

Now I remember, and I smile

For though the winter breeze was mild

My heart was burning strong and wild

Oh, I was living like a child

This is a poem I wrote back in college, based on the form and language of Robert Frost’s, “Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening.”  For those of you who like technical things (AABA, BBCB, CCDC, DDDD; Iambic Tetrameter; Uncomplicated Diction; Early 20th Century Language).  To see Frost’s poem, click here: http://www.poetryfoundation.org/archive/poem.html?id=171621.
