Winnie the Pooh Would Call This a “Rather Blustery” Evening…

Good Evening eighth-grade students. Thank you for visiting! I want to encourage you to continue turning those pages in your independent reading books, especially on a rather blustery night like this.

What are you learning from your current author? What are you enjoying?

Notice any amazing opening lines lately? How about this one…

Sometimes

I can still feel my right hand,

like a best friend;

weighted,

warm.

Wow! This is from Kelly Bigham’s novel, Shark Girl, a current Caudill nominee and my current read. Can you find the simile, the alliteration? She goes on to use repetition too, and it’s beautiful. What a way with words.

On another note, how is the writing coming along? I know many of you are continuing your narrative stories into longer novels. How are your characters developing? Be on the lookout for places to publish! I’m looking too.

Well, I’m off to enjoy a homemade chocolate chip cookie (okay, I cheated… they’re Tollhouse) and a nice, cold glass of milk. What do you think… snow day tomorrow?

We’re nearing the end of our first read aloud, Found, which is book one of the series, The Missing.

Without spoiling the ending (for those of you who are already finished), post your reactions to what we’ve read so far.

A reaction might be your feelings on a scene or character, what you think the author is doing well or not doing well, or predictions you may have for the end of the book (or of the series in general).
