SAMPLE REVIEW
REVIEW: I read the chapter entitled, “Housebreaking Your New Puppy,” in the book, Puppy Preschool, by John Ross and Barbara McKinney. In this chapter, the authors discuss the negative effects of NOT housebreaking a puppy, decisions to make before bringing the puppy home, setting a predictable pattern for the puppy, crate training, and what to do when accidents happen. I like that the writers take a proactive and loving approach to dog training. I especially like the idea of teaching the puppy to use the same spot in the back yard (to avoid the whole yard becoming a mess) and using a phrase like, “Hurry Up,” to teach her to later go on command. I do not disagree with anything the authors suggested and found this chapter to be a helpful resource for my future puppy training.
Students, you DO NOT NEED to color code your comments. I color coded to show you how I set up my comment: blue = a summary of the reading; purple = things I agreed with; and green = things I disagreed with. Also, notice that I began with the word “review” and a colon. Please do the same.
SAMPLE COMMENT
Golden Retriever, (Notice that I mentioned to whom I am responding.)
What a wonderful resource for puppy training. I too crate trained my puppy, and it seemed to work wonders for potty training. I recommend taking her out on a leash, so she can’t wander as you train her exactly where to go. I would also stick to a rigid schedule, so her body gets used to going at the same times each day. Be sure not to leave her in the crate for more than four hours those first few weeks. Check out http://www.puppypottytraining.net/ for more good information on puppy potty training. Thanks for the review and good luck!
REVIEW; I read “Ten Great Works Of Philosophy” and I thought it was really interesting. I like how the author included the actual works of Plato, Aristotle, ect. and not only that but hi opinions about the literature as well. I didn’t like the fact that it was really long and it was hard to understand considering it’s writen in Old English and it’s a college level book.
Mellow,
is that how you learned all your knowledge about Greek gods? lol i liked your review though and might read the book. -Matt Kun-
Mellow Yellow,
The book sounds really interesting. I do not know if i would read it because of being college level. Though it explains why you knows so much about the subject. It is a good review.
i agree with you mello yellow, it does sound really intresting, if you read that you could read just about anything. i might take a look it up
Mellow Yellow:
That book soudns interesting. lol. I love to talk to my mom and text to her in that kind of stuff because it just interests me alot. I think it’s cool how people from that long ago talked. Did you read the whole book?? And if you did how long did it take you? I would love to read it sometime and see even more how they talk.
Mellow Yellow,
Sounds like that book has alot of information in it but i might not beable to understand it very well.
Mello Yellow- That sounds like a very interesting book to learn more about philosophy and the people who studied and worked in that field. At a college level reading and hard to understand I probably wouldn’t read it, but overall it sounds like a very good book for information.
REVIEW: i read a few pages out of horsegirl’s book “The Duct Tape Book” by jim and tim. (Yes Golden retriever aproved of this book
) the few pages that i read were all about various uses for duct tape. it was actually really funny and i really enjoyed it. i found out a lot of new uses for duct tape that i never knew before. i like the fact that the writers made a funny book while still informing readers about different uses. i didn’t really disagree with anything and just thought it was all really funnt. THANKS HORSEGIRL!!!!!!!! -Matt Kun-
so are you actually gonna try them? i read the one about using it for nail polish remover, but i cant find any duct tape! in australia, their version of duct tape is basicaly electrical tape!!
~Raye
Matt Kun,
Sweet. I wanna read a book about duct tape!! What kind of things can you make, ’cause I bet I would use up like 5 rolls of tape lol. Oh, and who has the book?
Matt Kun,
Duct tape? That stuff is like my lifesaver. What kind of neat things can you make? I know my sisters made a wallet before. Anything would be cool in those crazy duct tape colors!
Matt Kun,
I never knew that there was so mant uses of duck tape, other than to fix stuff. I have only caught a glimpse of the book, but have heard other people, including horsegirl, talking about it. Now, I think I should take a closer look at it.
Seems really interesting. I wanna read that sometime!
I would like to learn cool, new things.
Kind of act like a spy. Haha.
Review: In Reader’s Digest of Oct 2009 What stresses you out the most by Kathleen Fifield, it tells that money is the number one stress of 10 out of 16 countries and health is on the last concern. I agree that money is a major issue. I disagree that health is least concern.
Horsegirl,
i agree with you because money is a big problem right now in the comminty and health is not the least concern. It is a big problem because people are getting sick. Everyday people suffer from money loss and sick people.
I agree with the stress about money. And i do kinda agree how health is least concern. Its totally true, all people care about is money.
REVIEW: i am reading the book “secrets of my holleywood life”. In the second chapter she has a photo shoot her name is kate and her mom is not in her dream. she is a famous actress that is in a movie. It is kind of a mystey because somebody is saying bad things about her and doesnt know who. I agree with the fact that she is mad in life because of her mom not likeing her. I dont disagree with anything in the book it is a good book.
hgfgftftfutyg, the book sounds really good to me. You’ll have to keep me updated about what other new things go on(:
I read this book last year and really enjoyed it.
:):):) Keep reading, it only gets better.
REVIEW: I just finished the book TWEAK, by Nic Sheff. It’s a memoir about Nic’s life on drugs. Its really powerful and depressing. Nic cannot stop using, and at one point, is dependsing on 7 or 8 substances at a time. He eventually gets support from his family and friends again, and manages to stay sober for over a year, only to relapse again. Its a constant cycle and eventually he can no longer have the trust of anyone in his life. I liked how it was an actual life, instead of just a story about drugs, like what i normally read. I relized that the way an author tells a story, and an addict tells his real story is completly different. It was really eye opening. I didn’t disagree with anything. I mean, how can I disagree when its his life? However, I couldn stand one part, which is in the AFTERWARD, which he wrote a year after writing the book. In the afterward, he mentioned that he relasped once again. Because I read his story, I felt like I knew him and the fact that he relasped made me want to scream at him. Overall, it was an amazing book.
UGH ClickClackMoose, that looks like a good book to read. I remember you reading that. Doing drugs is not good. I haven’t read a book like that. I think I should sometime because it looks and sounds very good. Do you have any suggestions on any other books that are like non-fiction and are awesome?!?!?!?!
ClickClackMoose;
Cool. Tht book sound good, very intersting, but i have no idea who nic sheff is.
ClickClackMoose,
That seems so interesting! I agree with liking how he wrote it about his life. I haven’t read it of course, but it seems like something you could really get in to. Also, I agree with you when you said that it was bad when he relasped once again. I mean, who would do that? I think that the whole drug problem is a waste and makes no sense. Your harming yourself for no reason! I disagree with his choices, but it seems like an awesome book!
ClickClackMoose- It sounds like an awesome book. It must be really intense. It sounds like a nice story line, I would expect this book being fiction, but I would have never expected this as Non-Fiction. This Review makes me want to start reading right away. You’re review and the book soundamazing, it has been put on my “someday list.”
It sounds like a very intense book that you were reading. So then it is pretty much a story about his drug life then right? I do have to agree with u on the AFTERWARD even though ive never read the book tht would make me very mad indeed. From what you have said about this book i think i would be willing to give it a try. It sounds like a book i’d be able to read. Pretty bad life though for the guy. But i think i shall give this book a try.
Clickclackmouse,
I read Tweak last year and I thought it was quite intense and great. If you want to read the father’s POV of whats going on with Nic, you could borrow it from me sometime. Its an aweosem read for anyone who likes the Crank books.
dear ClickClackMoose,
i would love to borrow tweak when you are done using it. Im just wondering, how old is Nic Sheff? I have never read a book about that kind of stuff, it sounds good, i have just started reading pretty much, and that is definatley going to be my next book!(:
I am reading this book right now ClickClackMoose, and i really enjoy it. It is a real eye opener! I can not believe that he keeps relapsing all those times, its so sad. I am at the part where he realises he has a problem and needs to get help. Its very hard to get through this book at the same time though, because, I know that these kind of things really do happen, its scary!
REVIEW: I am in the process of reading The Horse God Built by Lawrence Scanlan. It is the untold story of Secretariat the worlds greatest racehorse. It is very interesting and i learn morse stuff each time I read. In chapter two it has about two pages on the suffering racehorses go through. Not only are the ran to death, sometimes if the injuries the recieve are so significant that they are sent to slaughter houses. I mean, atleast try to give them some therapy so you’re not killing a beautiful creature!!! Some times during the ride to the slaughter house, they aren’t even given pain killers to help with the pain, so they are suffering inside the trailer!!! It says that 9,000 Thoroughbred racehorses are sent to slaughter every year in the US!!! Annually, 80,000 are killed for meat!!!! It also says that if so many horses are being slaugtered, not even because of injuries necessarily, then why not just breed fewer? Who cares if the grand dam or sire dont give birth to a magnificent racehorse, just one that is incapable of being ran? Maybe someone like me would buy it? They could sell it to someone and make a huge profit. I do agree that they should breed fewer. I disagree that 9,000 should be slaughtered and 80,000 should be food!!!!
I read this article on cell phones and how they would give u cancer. It was really interesting because i knew that the radio connectivity or something like that was bad for you! But some of the things i learned was very very interesting! You can get tumors by using your cell phone to much. When they found all this out it was a while ago and they have made cell phones much better for you to use since we use them in everyday life.
Review: I read the non-fiction novel “The Cubs Essential” by Lew Freedmen. It’s all about the history of the Chicago Cubs. I goes from the beginning of the Cubs to present day. The author talks about Wrigley Field, different players, significant games, and just pure history of the baseball team. It’s a really great book I found it really interesting, being the Cubs fan that I am. I didn’t know alot about Cubs history before I read this book, but now I do!
The Cub’s Fan book that CubsFan40 sounds interesting and that it is a good educational book to read.
Review; I read “Freedom Walkers, The Story of The Montgomery Bus Boycott” by Russell Freeman. This is many stories on the lives of those who were involved in The Montgomery Bus Boycott. This book is full of the stories, the struggles that people went through through out the country. It is more like biographies and events leading up to the Montgomery Bus Boycott. I really enjoyed this book. It felt like I went through a flashback, like I was there with them. The whole book was bitter sweet, surving past the Boycott, but at the expense of there family and friends. Some biographies in Freedom Walkers include Rosa Parks, and Martin Luther King, Jr. It was a very depressing book, but it was a nice book. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys learning and is fascinated about history. THE END
i read “freedom walkers” to and it was one that i thought was very toughing to me and it was all true.
Review: I read a non-fiction passage on Yellow Stone National Park.It basicly states all the past erupsions back 18 million years ago. I found it very interesting that the smoldering caldera once shot a piller of ash 100,000 feet imto the air raining down ash miles and miles around. Scientists belive that Yellow Stone is still a very active volcane site, though nothing serious has happend so far, many small earthquakes continue to occur around the park. I normally wouldn’t look into this kind of thing, volcanoes continue to interest me the more i hear about them… this Streetking123 signing off in 3…2…1…/
Streetking123,
Thats cool. I never knew that a caldera was shot 100,000 feet into the air. I agree with you volcanos never really intrested me but once I learned about them they got interseting to me.
ive been there it was amazing. ya that valcanoe kinda freaks me out to.
Review: I read an artical that was about breast cancer and told me information about how it may affect your health and about how the % of deaths have gone down in the numbered years.I had no idea that breast cancer with death hasd gone down 25%. I was suprised to know that the acual breast cancer cells in the body could spread to othe healthy cells in the body and make you very ill. I also didnt know that the cancer in your body could spread to your liver and many other places in your body. It is good to know the informations for myself because i have members in my family that have cancer.
REVIEW::I read an article out of the daily chronicle called ‘Earth Day Goal:Inspire, engage’ written by Dana Herra. This article i was all about how all these people are using things to make other things (reusing) this one boy made binoculars out of toilet paper tubes. I even learned that this year is earth days 40th anniversary. I agree that its a good idea to save our planet and use the three r’s in our daily lives. I don’t disagree with this article at all because I believe celebrating earth day with rallies of planting trees is a good way to keep our environment safe.
I agree with you (i love orange) We should save our planet and keep it clean and healthy. The three ‘Rs’ are important, becuase it will keep our earth alive longer. I like the idea of Earth Day, Becuase people are accually recognizing that our earth is dirty and we need to clean it up. If we don’t the earth might die out sooner than we think!
i love orange,
That sounds very intresting and creative! I think that everybody should use the three r’s in everyday life because even tho it might not affect us in out life time, it will affect the later generations to come. And holy cow! 40th anniversary, that makes it sound like it has been around for like ever!
i love orange,
thats really cool how theres soo many things that we can use for our advantages instead of throwing it all away. i think its great that we have earth day as a tradition and that we should keep trying to save our earth everyday. its interesting wat people do with things that can be recycled.
I am reading this artical from this magizine entitled, “Where The Eagles Are”, by Rene Ebersole, in the magizine, National Wildlife, the December| January 2005 one thingy. In this artical the arthour disscusses the reapearence of more and more bald eagles how they are comeing back. I think that this is amazingly awsome that is. I like How the arthour goes back in time and like talks about how common they were to see back then and how he asked other peoples oppinions on this artical like how amazed they were. I found a very interesting fact in this artical to. That every state has bald eagles except for hawaii i found that very interesting. I didnt disagree with any of the artical at all.
The Bees Knees,
Wow! I didn’t know that bald eagles were everywhere except for Hawaii. But, then again that would be a long fly for a land bird. Eagles seem to be coming back, and considering they are our national animal, I think that’s pretty cool. I’m pretty sure that Animal Planet has a going count on different animal species around the world. Thought you might want to check it out!
The Bees Knees,
I agree that that article about bald eagles is very interesting. Sometimes things, like the reappearance of bald eagles, happens and there is no apparent reason why. I also find it shocking that there are no bald eagles in Hawaii. Of course people are going to be amazed by the sudden come back, but that must mean that there are either coming back beacuse a predator is endangered, or the climate has changed wherever they were before.
Review:
I read freedom Walkers, The Story of the Montgumry Bus Boycott, by Russell Freedman. I liked the book, but it wasn’t one of the favorites. I agree with the book that it is right not to have segragation. People shouldn’t be treaded so differently just by the color of their skin. Plus think about it, if they would have never walked, imagen what our lives would be like today. Not everyone would be happy. Also the United States of America is a free country, not a country that judges who you are and what you are like by the color of your skin. That’s what the whole book was about. It was about how people felt about the segragation law, and that they had the nerve to stand up to the people. Which made a huge difference in our lives today. In the whole book it told me about people who i never new about that stood up the bus drivers before rosa parks and after her too! This book was interesting, but yet a little boring too.
REVIEW: Well i read some chapters in the book The Gient Book of Health facts. Hah. I thopught it was pretty interesting. There was a chapter about Mental Illnesses. Like did you inow that women have a 16% rate and men have a 14% rate of mental illnesses.
I guess i never really thought about what i wanted to be when i grew up, but as i read this i realized hpw much it interested me. So maybe i could be a doctor or something someday!(:
I read the book IGNITING A PASSION FOR READING BY STEVEN L. LAYNE. I read the first part called the foreward and it was about how two people found steven and are now like his sisters. It all started when a teacher and her entire class were reading one of his books. She invited him to the class to talk to the students. The book is about language traits and reading and skills. Sometimes i get into a book where i cant put it down and that is like the class and teachers.
i just got done reading an article about “STREE’S”. the article told me about entersting stuff about when people are strees and how they get it. one way a kid gets strees is from school. with all the homework and projects do including sports that you might do can built up.
i think tht the article abt yellow stone national park was very interesting. wat was said anyway. i’ve nevr rlly read anything abt tht place. thts rlly kool!!!!! it’s kool tht its still a very active volcano site. eek!!!!!!
i just got done reading an article about “STREE’S”. the article told me about entersting stuff about when people are strees and how they get it. one way a kid gets strees is from school. with all the homework and projects do including sports that you might do can built up.
theropist say that alot of kids get strees from school and even friends. theres also ways to help you through it like talking to your guidance council and make a chart planing your day.. i learned alot from this article and i think now im going to start planning my stuff i do better so i dont get streesed.
i did my non-fiction chapter abt edgar allan poe. he lived a very strange life. i knew he was weird, bt i nevr knew he once married his 13 yr. old cuzin!!!! weird!!!! tht guy was very interesting, bt i find all of hias poems and stories very interesting. he uses a lot of gothic personality. i rlly like “the raven” its very good!!
I finished reading “Igniting A Passion For Reading”! It’s such a great book, it focuses on alliterate readers, and has many suggestions on how to try and get them to read. There are also real life connections in the writing and at the end of each chapter that helps you connect as a reader. Most people would pribably find the book boring if they don’t like reading educational stuff, but if you do you would really be interested in it.
Review: I read a section from the book, “Believe It!, about the White Sox road to the World Series and their victory. The section was called, ” The Right Sox”, it is about the 3 games in the ALDS( American League Division Series) against the Boston Red Sox. The first two games were played at U.S. Cellular Field. Game 1 the White Sox blew Boston out 14-2 with outstanding performences from Paul Konerko, who hit third-inning homer off former Cub Matt Clemet. Scott Podsednik hit a three run homer in the sixth, and A.J. Pierzynski homered twice in the sixth and Juan Uribe went deep as well. The second game Boston was leading 4-2, until the fifth where, Tadahito Iguchi hit a three-run shot for the victory, which Mark Buehrle and their relief pitcher, held the game for a 5-4 victory. Finally in Game 3, the final game is taken to Fenway Park, one of the most exctiting games of the entire ALDS. This game featured a 58-minute sixth-inning where 6 pitchers threw 77 pitches. The White Sox still won with a 5-3 victory, winning the ALDS.
I recently read an Article called “stressed” in girl magize, it was very intense, it talked about how kids these days are so stressed to do good in school, so they can get a good job, it is very hard to get an occupation in this poor economy. Teachers shouldn’t pile on so much homework and parents should lay off a little.
REVIEW: I read the chapter playing around it the book “uncle matty’s ultimate guide to dog training.” It explains on howold dogs and puppies like to play because it involves learning basic skills and practicing them. It also says that you shouldn’t be rough when playing because the bonding process will stop, instead you should get down to the dogs level and make faces, rolld around, or manipulating their toys but not in a teasing manner. I like how it explains how to play with your dog in manner that will not make them agressive but will help the bonding process between the dogs and owners. I didn’t disagree with any of it.
REVIEW: I just finished the book Junie B. Jones and that Meanie Boy Jim’s Birthday by Barbara Park. Yes i know im way too old to read this book but i needed a few more A.R points to meet my goal. Anyways, Junie B. gets into a fight with this kid in her grade named Jim and he doesnt invite her to his birthday party with a petting zoo. Junie discovers that its okay to be different and not follow what everyone else does and to be her own person. I found this book very interesting. I have to say that i hate the fact that the auther repeats the same thing over and over at the start of each book. “My name is Junie B. Jones” blah blah blah. I know that shes in kindergarden and i know shes in room 9. I found it funny that shes in kindergarden and shes using big words that kindergardeners don’t usually use. I don’t know, i guess i recommend the book if your a K-2nd grader.
I’m reading the fourth book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series called The Battle of the Labyrinth. Right now I’m on chapter 14 and it’s gotten boring but, I’m still reading it and it’s gotten better. Has anyone read this book besides me so i can have feedback on if it gets boring again or not
Review:
I am reading the book “Tweak,” by Nic Sheff right now. It is very intense! Nic Sheff acutally wrote this book about himself. He has done some pretty crazy things in his life. This memior is about him, and his relapse. He writes this book, kind of like a diary. When i got to day two, i felt like it was a week shoved into a day. He is addicted to drugs. Then he realises that he has a problem, so he goes and he asks for help. Its a very interesting book!
Review::
For ozzie base 1 i did an article on the Milwakee Bucks beating the Atlanta Hawks in game 3 in the 1st round of the playoffs. They were down in the 3rd quarter but the Bucks rookie, Brandon Jennings, and vetern Jerry Stackhouse wernt done yet. In the begining of the 4th quarter Jennings did and alley-oop the Jerry Stackhouse and that ignited the run for the bucks. Carlos Delfino hit a franchise record of 7 three-point field goals in a single game. The little buck, Brandon Jennings put of 34 points 7 assists and 3 rebounds.
I read a chapter called, “All the Constelations That You Will Ever See,” in the book A Complete Guide to the Stars and Planets, by various Princeton proffesors. In this chapter, the authors explain with detail, maps, and their own calculations, where and when you can see all the Constellations of the night sky wherever you are standing on the Earth. They also included a complete list of all the constellations ever named, and how they got their name. I loved how they pulled me in with questions, and they kept me wanting more. They described all the greek myths that the constellations tie to with detail that had me rooting for the hero, and booing the bad guy. The only thing I can think of to disagree with this chapter is that you can only be certain places to enjoy the beauty of all 3000 stars seen by the naked eye. I believe that even if you are in the city, you can still the enjoy the limited stars you can see.
REVIEW: I just finished reading a chapter about a book on Adolf Hitler by Eleanor H. Ayer. I read this book because i was really curious about how Hitler became the man he was and such an awful person. In the first chapter it explains how people would do ANYTHING for him because they thought he was their god! They’d die for him and obviously kill whoever they wanted him to kill. Verrrry interesting!
Review:
I read Logan Breese’s Share-It and it was a non-fiction article about the possibility of a lot of fire fighters getting laid off and that some or many firefighters are going to have 3% salary cuts. I don’t think they should get laid off because then they would have to (Or choose not to if they don’t want to) go to a volenteer fire department and get a new job. I don’t think people should get laid off or get salary cuts because this isn’t really helping anyone other than the people who’s paying them. I think the government should give business owners more money if they need it. President Obama is just printing and borrowing more and more money. I was told that he is borrowing and printing more money than any other president before him him. I think it should stop. I think the health care reform isn’t helping. Why are they worried about that or even doing it when right now the economy is the thing that needs to be fixed or reformed, not health care.
hgfgftftfutyg: This book sounds really intresting. You should tell me more about it sometime.
Review: I was reading the book called Anne Frank. This book is about a girl that dies in concentration camps. Her father is a German man, and he loves it. A guy named Hitler hated all Jews, so he sent them all to the camps. Everyine died in her family except for her father. When this was all done he was very disappointed. In the book people find out how bad it was by her journal, that was found. When people read her journal they dont know how she cant always be so positive.
Review:I read chapter one, The greatest Bear of Them All, in the autobiography of Walter Payton-Never Die Easy. In this chapter, several relatives and friends of Walter briefly explained how they felt and what they did when they found out that Walter had a rare cancer. Many of them spoke of memories of the great football legend, while others just explained how heartbroken they were. I love how each person described Walter Payton as a kind and honorable man. For example, it was very clear that he loved his fans and would stop to talk to anybody whether he wanted to or not. Although I agree that he was an amazing and inspiring man, that is just a matter of opinion.
i read this article about Mariano Rivera and how he struggled to throw his four seam fastball. He couldnt even throw it in practice, then his freind Ramiro Mendoza said “stop messin around.” That kind of made me mad and why would he be messin around if he is the best closer to play the game. do you think thats stupid when somebody is hurt but freinds say they arn’t.
i read this article about how Mariano Rivera got hurt. He couldnt throw his four seam fast witch that was one of his best pitches for his closers. it bothered him so much that he could not even throw that pitch at practice when they were warming up. So one day at practice one of his freinds that always warms up with named Ramiro Mendoza said “knock it off.” So at a game this catcher from the opposing team said im really nervous for Rivera becuase he might lose all the stats he has worked hard for. It was a very goood article about him.
i read this article on mariano rivera it was taking about in the 97′s he got hurt and he couldnt throw his four seam fastball which is one of his best pitches for the closers. It was so bad that he couldnt even throw with his freind ramiro mendoza in warmups and he said stop throwin the baall every where. he was at a game and a player from the oposing team was nervous for him. this article was really good.
